RELIGION BRIEFS

A DAY OF REMEMBRANCE for the estimated 6 million people killed by Hitler's orders before and during World War II is scheduled Sunday at Temple Emanuel, 1163 Persinger Road S.W.

A public reading of victims of the Holocaust will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. An ecumenical service, sponsored by the Roanoke Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Jewish Community Council and a group from Hollins College, will be held at 3:30 p.m.

The service marks the 50th anniversary of an uprising in the Warsaw ghetto in which Jews sought unsuccessfully to escape from Nazi extermination policies. A candle-lighting ceremony and a dramatic reading by Jean Larson, accompanied by Victoria Bond at the organ, also will be part of the observance.

\ ETHICAL CHOICES: REFORMING THE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM will be the theme of the Church Women United's May Fellowship Day program. The program will be at Westhampton Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 2515 Grandin Road S.W. on May 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

\ ROANOKE AREA MINISTRIES, an interfaith agency to help those needing day shelter, a hot noon meal and various emergency services is seeking volunteers to prepare food, serve meals and receive clients. The agency also need food and equipment donations.

Meal help is especially needed on the first, third and fifth Fridays in May from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Call Susan Adams, coordinator, at 345-8850.

\ CAROLINA, a family gospel group, of will perform Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at First Evangelical Methodist Church, 1920 Lucas St. in Salem. The family - a mother and her three sons - presents both music and testimonies of their healing from alcohol and illegal drug addiction. Call 387-0326 for more information.

\ WEST MAIN STREET CHURCH OF CHRIST will hold a seminar on "Children At Risk" May 1 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall. The seminar will use a video featuring evangelical Christian counselor James Dobson. A nursery will be staffed. Call 389-2400 for more information.
