GOFF, LIBERTY SHUT OUT APPOMATTOX

Karla Goff threw a complete-game seven-hit shutout as Liberty beat Appomattox 9-0 in a Seminole District softball game at the Minette's ballpark Thursday.

Goff struck out five and walked none. Kelly Witt and Melissa Dooley each went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs for Liberty (4-3-1 overall and in the district). Appomattox is 6-4.

In other softball:

At Daleville, Jamie Switzer drove in four runs with three hits as Lord Botetourt cruised past Franklin County 16-4 in a non-district game. Shannon Deel was 2-for-2 with a bases-loaded triple for the Cavaliers (4-1). Franklin County is 4-2.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: In Martinsville, the Bulldogs survived the last 30 minutes playing one man short to hand Franklin County its first loss, 2-1 in a non-district game.

With Martinsville leading 2-1 in the second half, Martinsville midfielder Bryant Reeves received a red card (his second infraction) for kicking another player in a dead-ball situation and was ejected. A team cannot substitute for a player who receives a red card.

Martinsville goalie Chris Cook had 12 saves to keep the Bulldogs (5-2) ahead. Link Shaw and Todd Johnson scored Martinsville's goals.

Franklin County is 6-1-1.

Jamie Bednarek scored two goals and Lord Botetourt limited guest Rockbridge County to seven shots on a windy day in a 5-1 Blue Ridge District victory. Lord Botetourt (6-2, 5-1) took 26 shots.

\ BASEBALL: At Narrows, Robbie Huffman's suicide squeeze in the top of the seventh inning scored Zach Peters with the winning run as Craig County defeated the Green Wave 7-6. Johnny Crawford hit a solo homer and pitched 5 innings for the Rockets (2-7), whose only victories have come against Narrows.

Ben Boardwine pitched the last 1 1/3 innings to shut Narrows down (4-2).

In Bedford, Rustburg's Bill Colbert was the winning pitcher and had four hits and three RBI as the Devils won a Seminole District game 13-7 over Liberty. Mica Hendrick and David Overstreet each went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Liberty (4-3, 4-3). Rustburg is 4-3, 4-3.

Jefferson Forest scored 12 of its runs in the third and the fifth innings in a 16-6 Seminole District victory over Buckingham County. Vince Whorley went 4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI for the Cavaliers (6-2, 6-2).

Ryan Gilleland and Charles Taylor were a combined 6-for-8 with three doubles, a home run and five RBI. Carter Lee recovered to improve to 2-0 with an eight-strikeout six-hitter.

Jason Shuemaker and Lee Jamerson both hit home runs in a five-run fifth for the Knights (1-5, 1-5).

\ TRACK: In Forest, William Campbell swept the boys' and girls' meets, beating Jefferson Forest and Staunton River. Staunton River's Phillip Clemons won the mile and two-mile runs; Jefferson Forest's Toby Fifer won the high jump, 110-meter hurdles, 300-meter hurdles and was an anchor on the winning mile relay. In the girls' meet, William Campbell's Hope Cook won the long jump, high jump, 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash and anchored the 400-meter relay.
