HOKIES SHUT OUT KEYDETS

Virginia Tech pitcher Rob Gibson weathered 13 VMI hits to shut out the Keydets 6-0 at Patchin Field in Lexington. Dee Dalton hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning and Denny Hedspeth doubled home a run in the third as the Hokies (25-10) took a 2-0 lead. Tech added four in the top of the ninth, two on a single by Popeye Smith. Gibson improved to 3-1. Marc Phillips (3-8) took the loss for VMI, which stranded 10 runners.

At Radford, senior guard Brian Schmall was named the winner of the 1992-93 Radford University Donald N. Dedmon Most Valuable Player award in men's basketball at Thursday's banquet. Schmall, from Rockville, Md., averaged 13.4 points and a school-record seven assists per game.

Virginia Tech heavyweight wrestler Josh Feldman, who finished in a ninth-place tie in the NCAA Tournament, was voted the team MVP for the 1992-93 season. Feldman finished with a 27-7 record.

With the score tied 2-2, Rob Amos and Tom Curran drove in a run each for Radford in the sixth inning and the Highlanders held off a James Madison rally to win 4-3 in Radford. Eric Harris improved to 4-0 for the Highlanders (20-13). The Dukes (16-18) left eight men stranded. Radford faces Maryland-Baltimore County in Big South action Saturday at 1 p.m.

Radford lost its first two softball games in the Big South Tournament in Buies Creek, N.C., and was eliminated. UNC-Greensboro nipped Radford 5-4 and the Charleston Southern defeated the Highlanders 17-10. Radford ends the season 6-28.

Virginia Tech basketball senior Lisa Griffith, a 1,000-point scorer, won the Ed Motley Inspiration Award on Thursday night at the team's annual awards banquet in Blacksburg. In other awards, Jenny Root (14.9 ppg) was named the best offensive player and Lisa Leftwich (53 steals) was named the best defensive player. Freshman Terri Garland, from Dublin, won the sixth man award and Cynthia Lee, from Martinsville, won the most improved award.
