GORE LETTER USED BY FOES OF ABORTION

An ad published Thursday in The Washington Post used a 1987 letter by Vice President Al Gore to attack the Clinton administration's support of federally funded abortions.

The full-page ad - headlined "Al Gore was Right" - was placed by the Christian Coalition, the political arm of Virginia Beach-based religious broadcaster Pat Robertson.

In the 6-year-old letter to a Tennessee constituent, then-Sen. Gore said he opposed federal abortion funding. "In my opinion, it is wrong to spend federal funds for what is arguably the taking of a human life," Gore wrote.

Clinton favors allowing states to place some restrictions on abortion rights but has reversed several Reagan-Bush anti-abortion policies and has proposed reversing more. As vice president, Gore has supported the administration's position.
