FOODS CO-OP PLANS EARTH DAY OBSERVANCE

An Earth Day celebration will will be held Saturday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op, 1330 Grandin Road, Roanoke.

A picture of your baby is worth a $5 coupon toward environmentally friendly diapering products. Other freebies include water quality testing (a pint sample is needed); southern yellow pine and Norway spruce seedlings; information on paint and radon testing and making your home environmentally safe; and snack foods samples, a spice basket, T-shirts, posters and two lifetime Co-Op memberships.

Bring old T-shirts, jeans and shopping bags of any type for recycling. To volunteer or for more information, call Elizabeth Wilson at 343-5652.

Virginia's Explore Park also will hold several events to mark Earth Day, which was officially April 22. Between 10 a.m.-noon, a newly planted area of endangered Chestnut trees will be dedicated.

Wildflower walks will be conducted at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Beginning at 7:30 p.m., park visitors will get a chance to look for nocturnal animals using night-vision goggles produced by ITT.

Finally, free juice, coffee and doughnuts will be served from 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. at the Community Recycling Station off Wonju Street, and volunteers will be available to assist people with recycling.
