SETH CALLS 'EM AS HE HEARS 'EM

EVIDENTLY the lady who objected to critic Seth Williamson's "negative" reviews of the Roanoke Symphony would prefer a kind of rabid booster or flack to do the reviews (April 9 letter, "Lay off Roanoke's fine symphony"). In Seth we are lucky to have a discerning, knowledgeable musician/musicologist who has often been known to pass out praise when it is deserved.

As a lifelong jazz fan, I wanted to like the David Baker piece played after much ballyhoo in the last concert. Instead, like Williamson, I found the work to be hackneyed, lackluster and, worst of all from a jazz composer, dull.

Please continue to call them as you hear them, Seth!
