The proposed club has commitments from more than 100 prospective members, and a committee of officers hopes to double that figure before a meeting late next month.
The group has met informally twice and Dan Wooldridge, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference commissioner and former basketball and football official, has been elected president.
Wooldridge said the goal is at least 200 members at an annual membership fee of $25. That would enable the sports club to start with $5,000 in its treasury.
The new sports club intends to incorporate as a non-profit organization and hold dinner meetings with guest speakers - a format similar to the former Roanoke Valley Sports Club, which folded about a decade ago.
More than 65 members already have paid a $25 fee. The club hopes to have its first dinner meeting in August or September, and wants to present speakers across a wide range of topics and interests.
Wooldridge said the next meeting has been moved back two weeks - to May 26 at 7 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center - in order to give the club more time to seek memberships.
Besides Wooldridge, the other officers are vice president Charlie Moir, secretary Pat Whitescarver and treasurer Joe Thomas Jr.
