EMISSIONS RULES MADE ON COOLING SYSTEMS

The Environmental Protection Agency on Friday issued final rules designed to halt the emission of ozone-depleting chemicals into the atmosphere during the servicing and disposal of air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment.

The new requirements, which take effect in about two months, are expected to cut by more than one-half the annual emission of chlorofluorocarbons and other ozone depleters.

The rules will not prevent continued use of ozone-depleting chemicals in cooling equipment, but do strictly control the handling of such substances so that they are recovered and recyled. - The Washington Post
