W.H. EANES, EX-NEWSPAPER EXECUTIVE, DIES

W. Howard Eanes, former assistant managing editor of The Roanoke Times, died Friday of a heart attack in a Bristol hospital. He was 64.

He was one of four journalists presented Nov. 19 with the Meritorious Service Award by The Associated Press Managing Editors Association.

Eanes began his career as a reporter for the Progress-Index in Petersburg. He later worked as a reporter for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, city editor of the Lynchburg News and Sunday editor of the Newport News-Daily Press.

He joined The Roanoke Times as a makeup editor in 1965, became city editor three months later and was promoted to assistant managing editor in July 1966, a position he held for three years.

He then went to work at Washington and Lee University as superintendent of the institution's Journalism Laboratory Press for a year before returning to Roanoke to work three more years as assistant managing editor.

In 1974, Eanes was named managing editor of The Augusta Chronicle in Augusta, Ga. Ten years later, he was named executive editor of it and the afternoon paper, The Augusta Herald. He held the position for three years.

He later moved to Bristol and had been working part-time as a copy editor at the Bristol Herald Courier.

Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday in the Akard Funeral Home chapel in Bristol, Tenn.
