SITE OF LINCOLN, GRANT'S LAST MEETING IS FOR SALE

The Virginia Historic Preservation Foundation will offer the brick mansion where President Abraham Lincoln and Gen. Ulysses Grant met for the last time for sale to owners who will restore the house.

The foundation announced Friday it had purchased the Thomas Wallace house from Mount Olivet Baptist Church with the help of the city of Petersburg and The Historic Petersburg Foundation.

Lincoln chose the Thomas Wallace House for his April 3, 1865, meeting with Grant to discuss the final campaign of the Civil War. It was during that meeting that Lincoln learned of the fall of Richmond. Lincoln was assassinated 11 days later.
