IRA BLAMED FOR FATAL LONDON BLAST

An apparent IRA bomb hidden in a dump truck tore through London's financial district Saturday, killing at least one person and injuring dozens.

Hours later, two car bombs exploded in separate parts of the city.

Scotland Yard reported no casualties from the car bombs, which went off in taxis nearly simultaneously just before midnight.

The financial center bomb sent a mushroom cloud over the skyline and injured at least 34 people in a hail of flying glass and debris.

Rescue workers found a man's body in the street. Police feared more people were trapped inside bomb-damaged buildings.

The Irish Republican Army did not immediately claim responsibility for the attack, but two IRA coded telephone warnings of a bomb in the area were received by police before the 10:27 a.m. (5:27 a.m. EDT) blast.

"I have no doubt that the IRA are responsible for this explosion," said police Detective Superintendent John White.

No one claimed responsibility for the two car bombs, either.
