RUMLEY WINS AT NEW RIVER

For the second straight week, Johnny Rumley found himself leading the Late Model Stock Car race at New River Valley Speedway after misfortune struck those in front.

And for the second straight week, the Winston-Salem, N.C., driver kept the lead once it was handed to him. Saturday night, it was in the 100-lap feature race of the Winston 200.

This time, Rumley had to hold off Tony McGuire to do it.

Rumley led all 100 laps. But over the last 10 laps, McGuire pulled closer to the lead. The two cars would almost be even coming out of the fourth turn, but every time Rumley pulled about half a car length out in front.

The scenario repeated itself until McGuire ran out of laps and Rumley won by the length of his hood.

"The Good Lord was shining down on me," Rumley said. "Thanks to Tony McGuire the fans got to see some really good racing those last two laps. And I just came out on top. That's all there was to it."

Rumley was third on the starting grid. But as the green flag dropped, pole-sitter Paul Radford and No. 2 starter Hank Turman tangled in turn 4.

Radford had sheet metal damage to the right side, while Turman lost his driver's side door in the accident. Both stayed up with the leaders, but because of their altercation, that meant staying up with Rumley.

Radford worked his way back to second place on lap 15. He stayed there until McGuire passed him on the back stretch on lap 70. He finished third.

Turman would later be involved in a five-car accident on lap 17. It started when Malcolm Fink slid into Turman. The accident wrecked Tink Reedy's brand new Oldsmobile.

Michael Rich, the defending Mid-Atlantic points champion, finished fourth. David Browning Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla., was fifth.

The average speed of the race was 63.86 mph. It was slowed by six caution flags for a total of 27 laps.

In the 25-lap Modified Mini race, Dale Sutphin of Max Meadows won again. He inherited the lead when Scott Brawley spun in turn 2 just three laps from the finish. Eddie Rankin finished second.

In the 25-lap Pure Stock race, Grump Wills easily outdistanced Ronnie Vaught.

The races in the other two divisions - Limited Sportsmen and Mini Stock - were not completed at press time.
