Filchner, who ranks fifth in the nation in RBI, knocked in his 49th run of the year and went 4-for-5 in the second game.
Retrievers pitcher Kevin Loewe (6-0) held the Highlanders (9-8, 21-14) to six hits as UMBC rolled past Radford 12-3 in the first game.
In the second game, Maryland-Baltimore County (9-6, 17-10) opened a 6-1 lead but Bill Brennan's two-run homer in the fourth sliced the margin to 6-3.
After UMBC scored again, Tom Curran and Alex Vaxmonsky walked with one out. Filchner followed with a two-run double and scored on a single by Denny Van Pelt to make the score 7-6. Filchner, Radford's left fielder, made a catch against the wall in the sixth innning to squelch a scoring threat. He produced a one-out double in the seventh off Brian Raino (3-4). Brennan hit an RBI single with two outs to tie the score 7-7.
Highlander catcher John Gegg and third baseman Rob Wilson started the bottom of the eighth with singles and Rob Amos was intentionally walked to load the bases. With two out, Filchner belted a single over the head of leftfielder Jason Kasch for the deciding run.
