GEORGIA TECH LEADS CAVALIER CLASSIC

At Charlottesville, top-ranked Georgia Tech maintained its first-round lead after 36 holes of the eighth annual Cavalier Classic, played on the par-72 Birdwood Golf Course. The Yellow Jackets, two-time defending champs, shot 290 Saturday for a two-round total of 584 and a one-shot lead over Duke. Virginia is third at 590 after Saturday's low round of 283.

Old Dominion (614) is tied for 12th, Virginia Tech (616) is 14th, Richmond (618) is 15th and Liberty (631) is 18th in the 18-team field. For Tech on Saturday, Roanoker Lewis Conner shot a 74, Tom Graziano 75, Clayton Friend 76 and Sean Farrell 79. The final round is today.

Behind former U.S. Amateur champion Bill Campbell, the West Virginia state golf team took a two-point lead over Virginia in singles matches at the Greenbriar Hotel in White Sulpher Springs, W.Va.

The West Virginians captured three of five matches, but Virginians' wins were by larger margins, allowing the Virginia state team to stay close.
