At Lynchburg's City Stadium, Blacksburg got second-half goals from Jason Boyle and Augie Niles to defeat Heritage 2-1 for the championship of the Southwest Virginia Soccer Classic. Chris Evans assisted on both goals for the Indians (8-0). Heritage is (2-4). North Cross and E.C. Glass also participated in the weekend event.
Sophomore Robey Caldwell pitched a four-hitter for his second victory of the season as Cave Spring shut out Patrick Henry 13-0 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game. Robert Kaczmarek went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, Billy Cole was 2-for-3 with three RBI and Scott Fayed had three hits, a double and two RBI for the Knights (7-2 overall, 5-0 district). The Patriots are 1-5, 0-4.
At Lynchburg, Holy Cross scored six runs on four hits in the fifth inning en route to a 11-1 Blue Ridge Conference softball victory over Roanoke Valley Christian. Gail England was 4-for-4 with a two-run triple for the Gaels (9-0). The Eagles (2-4) scored their only run on a triple by Hope Hicks in the third inning.
At Charlottesville, Stephanie Scanlin scored two goals and Aimee Beightol had one goal and two assists as Cave Spring defeated Albemarle 4-2 in a girl's soccer match. Ann Schleupner scored one goal and Allison Beightol had one assist for the Knights (4-0-1).
James Maybury was the lone finisher for the Roanoke College men's track team at the Old Dominion Athletic Conference track championships at Bridgewater. He placed fifth in the 1500-meters and 5,000 meters.
Lynchburg won the championship and the Maroons finished sixth.
Kera Schneiter was Roanoke's top finisher in the women's competition, which was not an an official ODAC championship. She finished second in the javelin with a throw of 94 feet, 4 inches.
