OBIT IRVIN, DORAL EDWARD

IRVIN, Doral Edward, 79, of Bedford County, passed away on Friday, April 23, 1993, at the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg on August 24, 1913, the son of the late John Doral Irvin and Alma Crews Irvin. He was the husband of Katherine Rinsland Irvin. Mr. Irvin retired as Executive Director of the Elks National Home in Bedford after 21 years. Prior to moving to Bedford in 1964, he served as manager of plant operations with Morton Manufacturing Corp., Lynchburg. Currently he was serving as Esteemed Leading Knight of the Grand Lodge of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks (BPOE). He had also served as Exalted Ruler of the Lynchburg Lodge and as Virginia State President (BPOE). He was active in civic organizations and held leadership positions with the Boy Scouts of America, Lions International, the United Way, the Bedford Chamber of Commerce and the former Bedford Memorial Hospital Foundation. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, Bedford, where he had served as Sevior Warden and a member of the Vestry. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Katherine E. Hughes of Lynchburg; a son, John D. Irvin of Daphne, Ala.; a sister, Edith I. Howe of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; three grandchildren, Lee C. Hughes, Nicole E. Irvin and J. Rinsland Irvin. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Seventh and Clay Streets, Lynchburg, at 11 a.m. Monday with the Rev. James A. Creasy and the Rev. John T. Arms IV officiating. Burial will follow in Fort Hill Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to either the Elks National Home Memorial Garden or St. John's Episcopal Church, Bedford. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford and also following the services at the apartment of Mr. and Mrs. William Pickett at the Elks National Home, Bedford. Carder-Tharp Funeral Home, Bedford, is handling arrangements.
