About 100 people lined up outside the Newport News-Williamsburg International Airport shortly after noon to catch a glimpse of Clinton as he boarded Air Force One.
Some 50 more spectators waited inside a recently replaced airport terminal building near where the president's plane was parked, hoping for a chance to shake his hand.
On Saturday, Clinton and daughter Chelsea surprised tourists visiting the restored Jamestown Settlement by touring the grounds and shaking hands.
But the only people to get next to Clinton just before he left were his police escorts. The local officers and state troopers who brought the presidential motorcade from the private Kingsmill Resort to the airport lined up for a farewell handshake.
Many of the people who came out to see Clinton knew he had spent the weekend in the area, even though no public events were on his agenda. Others were attracted by the huge plane waiting for him.
"We were just driving around and happened to see it," said Edward Johnson of York County, who brought his wife and two daughters.
Quincy Jones, a soldier stationed at Fort Monroe and a Poquoson resident, said his hometown is why he wanted to see Clinton. Jones is from Clinton, Ark.
But he also was curious about the plane. "I'm anxious to see how many people get on there," he said.
Traveling with Clinton were Democratic Sens. Edward Kennedy and John Kerry of Massachusetts.
Clinton was at Kingsmill for a three-day meeting of about 40 Democratic senators. The meeting was private, and reporters were not allowed onto the 2,900-acre Kingsmill property.
