W.VA. WINS AMATEUR GOLF TITLE OVER VIRGINIA 32-28

Mike Good stayed 2 under par Sunday and teamed with Harold Payne for 11 points as West Virginia edged Virginia 32-28 in the annual match between the states' best amateur golfers at the Greenbrier course in White Sulpher Springs, W.Va. For Virginia's wins, Ned Babar beat Bill Campbell 2.5-0.5, Charles Green beat Reid Carroll 2.5-0.5, Allen Barber edged Mitchell Roush 2-1 and Tom McKnight blanked WVU's Dave Pope 3-0.

Pole-sitter Kenny Montgomery led throughout and won the 35-lap Limited Sportsman race late Saturday night at New River Valley Speedway. In the 25-lap Mini Stocks race, fastest qualifier Tony Howell outdueled Eric Huff down the stretch.

The Floyd County Amateur Athletic Union basketball team reached the semifinals of the state AAU tournament in Richmond. Floyd County defeated Virginia Beach 52-22, the Virginians of Woodbridge 62-57, and James River 51-44.
