Pulling his race car in a trailer, Newman uprooted a mailbox making a right turn from Route 220. Six hours later, he handled his turns much better. Newman uprooted the 15-car Late Model field and won the 100-lap feature at the Miller Genuine Draft/J-93 300.
"I apologized to the woman who owned the mailbox, but I told her if I won tonight, I might have to hit one again next week," Newman joked. The win was Newman's first in two years at FCS and prevented points leader Rick Sigmon from winning his third consecutive race.
Newman was unable to collect a $500 bounty offered by promoter Whitey Taylor to any driver who could knock off Sigmon, however, because Sigmon did not finish the event..
Tommy Dean edged Steve Lam in their 25-lap Mini Stock battle, and took a 2-1 lead in races won this season. Points leader Wayne Corprew finished third.
R.W. Lawhorne, celebrating his first wedding anniversary Saturday night, dethroned two-time winner Leon Moles in the Pure Stock competition and collected a $100 bounty. Mike Owens was second.
Vinton's Phillip VanDerVeer made it three in a row with a victory in the Street Stock division. Freddie Goff and Chris Foley placed second and third, respectively.
Mike Hall was the Rookie winner, outrunning Josh Ingram who was second and Jimmy Wilson who placed third. Hall was also a $100 bounty winner, because two-time winner Gordon Wingfield finished sixth. Frank Kelly was Any Car champion, besting Dean Sutphin (second), Jimmy Floyd (third), and 15 others.
