BUILDING PERMIT VALUES.

Municipal officials in Roanoke, Roanoke County and Salem last week reported issuing permits for nearly $11.7 million worth of new construction in March, up 106 percent from February's $5.7 million and 38 percent from $8.4 million a year earlier. The jump was due primarily to two projects:

A $3.5 million, 50,000-square-foot addition to the Vitramon Inc. plant at the Centre for Industry and Technology in Northeast Roanoke. Vitramon makes capacitors, tiny electronic devices used in computers and automobiles.

A new Lowe's Companies Inc. store at Towne Square Shopping Center in Northwest Roanoke. The $3.1 million building permit is for a 115,000-square-foot building to open in the fall. - Staff report
