RJR JOINS CIGARETTE PRICE WAR - FOR A MONTH

The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. plans to cut prices temporarily on its Winston and Camel brand cigarettes, matching Philip Morris' opening salvo in a price war.

Reynolds said it will cut the price of Winstons $4 a carton or 40 cents a pack nationwide during June. It also will offer two-for-one sales and price cuts or rebates on Camels, with the type of promotion varying by market, she said.

The decision by the Winston-Salem tobacco giant comes on the heels of an announcement by Philip Morris USA on April 2 that it will cut the price of its Marlboro cigarettes. Philip Morris USA had no comment on the R.J. Reynolds move, a spokeswoman said. - Associated Press
