HIGH HEART-DRUG DOSE DANGEROUS, FDA SAYS

The Food and Drug Administration urged physicians Monday to stop prescribing the new heart drug Manoplax in 100 milligram-per-day doses, saying the higher dosage increases patients' risk of death.

The agency said the 75 mg. and 50 mg. doses of the drug are safe and may still be used.

The FDA approved the drug Dec. 30 for congestive heart-failure patients who do not respond to or cannot tolerate other medications. - Associated Press
