MISSING MAN FOUND DEAD IN RIVER

A body found Monday on the north fork of the Pound River was that of a man who had been reported missing one week earlier, authorities said.

The body of Raymond H. Combs, 58, of Pound, was sent to the state medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.

"Right now it's an apparent drowning, but we're making no determination until we hear from the autopsy," Lt. David Mullins of the Wise County Sheriff's Department said.

Combs' family reported him missing about 7:30 p.m. April 19. He apparently had headed to work that morning at Westmoreland Coal Co., where he was a miner, but he never arrived and never came home that evening.
