MEDICAL EXPERTS WOULDN'T GASP

IN THE April 1 Roanoke Times & World-News, staff writer Laura Williamson writes about the controversial book, "Sex Respect," now available in the Roanoke County schools. She has Deanna Gordon, assistant superintendent of county schools, "gasping" at a line in the book. "Gasp" is a strong word, but it is not Ms. Gordon's word but Ms. Williamson's.

What has upset Ms. Gordon, according to the article, are these words from the book:

"Nature is making some kind of a comment on sexual behavior through the AIDS and herpes epidemics."

Maybe not. But unprotected, promiscuous intercourse is one way to get AIDS. No medical expertise disputes that. ROBERT B. SEARS ROANOKE
