IT'S GONNA BE A HOT TIME IN THE OLD TOWN

There's no shortage of things to do this weekend in Roanoke. From concerts, clowns and kids' events to world-class chili, the Star City's the place to be, beginning Friday with:

Community School's 13th Annual Strawberry Festival

The festival takes place at Crestar Plaza on Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. each day. Desserts cost from $2.50 to $3.50, and tickets will be available at the event.

\ Entertainment on Saturday:

10:30 a.m.: The Community School Jug Band & Chorus.

11:45 a.m.: Bo Chagnon sing-along.

12:45 p.m.: Stowe & Lowe, African rhythms.

1:45 p.m.: Curley Ennis, folk songs.

2:45 p.m.: The Third Step, rap music.

3:45 p.m.: David Stuart Bear, juggler.

The 1993 Virginia Championship Chili Cookoff

Fifty-seven cooks from as far away as Nevada and as near as Roanoke will be in the 14th annual competition Saturday on the Roanoke City Market. The grand prize is the opportunity to represent the Old Dominion at the World Championship Chili Cookoff Oct. 3 in Reno, Nev.

The action takes place on Salem Avenue, Market Street and Wall Street. Chili samples will be ready for tasting as soon as the fires are hot. Lots of activities for kids, too, a hot pepper eating contest for anyone with a cast-iron stomach and music until winners are announced.

\ The entertainment on stage at Dominion Plaza:

9:45 a.m.: Emcee Frank Blankemeyer opens the festivities with the National Anthem.

10 a.m.: Kickin' Country

Noon: Hot pepper eating contest

12:30 p.m.: Just Country

1:30 p.m.: Stoney Ridge

2:30 p.m.: Just Country

3:30 p.m.: Plum Sideways

4:30 p.m.: Winners announced

Roanoke Catholic School Carousel

The place to be for arts and crafts, a petting zoo and plenty of song and dance. The campus on North Jefferson Street will be decked out in an Old West theme for the family event on Saturday and Sunday. The entertainment lineup:\ Saturday:

1 p.m.: Taekwondo Plus - martial arts expo

The West End Association's May Fest

The inaugural event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Patterson Avenue Southwest will be blocked off between 13th and 14th Streets for the festival. Highlights include a pig roast, dunking booth, clowns, magic show, basketball shoot-off, bicycle rodeo, May pole, food booths and games and events for children.
