KNIGHTS SHUT OUT PULASKI

Kevin Vineyard improved to 5-0 with a four-hit shutout as Cave Spring defeated Pulaski County 2-0 in a Roanoke Valley District baseball game Tuesday at Dublin.

Vineyard struck out seven. Robert Kaczmarek went 3-for-4 for the Knights (8-2, 6-0) and scored the winning run. Pulaski County is 1-9, 1-6.

In other baseball:

At Northside, Ben Taylor was 2-for-3 with a double and three runs batted in as Northside handed Alleghany its first loss, 5-3, in a Blue Ridge District game. Mark Freeland (3-1) was the winning pitcher for the Vikings (6-2-1) and Alan Christian, who went 3-for-3 at the plate, earned the save. Alleghany is 10-1.

At Maher Field, the decisive runs scored on wild pitches as E.C. Glass outlasted Patrick Henry 10-8 in nine innings. Richard Mason had three doubles for the Patriots (1-6).

At Glenvar, Jason Anderson pitched a two-hitter and got 16 of 21 outs by strikeout as Glenvar shut out Parry McCluer 3-0. Trevor Willis led the Highlanders with two hits and an RBI.

At Buchanan, Jodie Steger cracked a three-run homer and David Hall drove in four runs as James River defeated Bath County 8-2 in a Pioneer District game. Keith Bryant pitched a four-hitter, striking out seven, and Chico Tolley went 3-for-3 for the Knights (4-4, 4-2). Bath County slipped to 4-2, 4-1.

At Lexington, Norman Vest pitched a two-hit shutout and went 3-for-3 as Rockbridge County downed Salem 3-0.

Nathan Hicks scored two and drove in four to lead Roanoke Valley Christian past visiting Carlisle 9-7 in a Virginia Independent Conference game.

At North Cross, Barry Bunnell led off the top of seventh inning with a home run to lift Lynchburg Christian to a 7-6 win over North Cross. Aaron Lange and Ryan Shaver homered for the Raiders.

William Byrd remained unbeaten with a 6-2 victory over Lord Botetourt in Daleville. Shannon Gray was 2-for-4 for the Terriers (10-0). Mike McGuire (3-0) pitched 6 innings, giving up one hit while striking out nine batters. Lord Botetourt is 5-3.

At New Castle, Johnny Crawford extended his home run streak to four games as Craig County swept a doubleheader from Highland. The Rockets won the first game 9-0 as Crawford hit a two-run double and a two-run homer, and pitched a nine-strikeout one-hitter.

Craig County stole 15 bases in the second game and won 13-1. Ben Boardwine drove in four with a double and a triple and Crawford homered again.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Vinton, Jay Reynolds scored six goals and Brian Cooley added four as the Vinton Lacrosse Club handled Patrick Henry 14-6. Goalie Kirk Lancaster had 12 saves for Vinton, the club team from William Byrd High School.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, Bradley Blum scored the winning goal with 11 seconds left as North Cross defeated Martinsville 2-1. John Prillaman scored the other goal for North Cross (8-1-2). Marty Martin had the lone goal for the Bulldogs (5-5).

At Daleville, Lord Botetourt avenged an April 15 loss with a 3-0 victory over Roanoke Catholic (3-3). Chris Perrin had a goal and two assists for the Cavaliers (8-2) and Kris Keeton added a goal and an assist.

\ SOFTBALL: Glenvar used a nine-run sixth inning to earn a 16-6 Pioneer District victory over Parry McCluer. Marilea Hale and Amy Moses had two hits each in the inning for the Highlanders (4-5, 4-1).The Fighting Blues are 7-4, 3-3.

At Allegany, three Mountaineers drove in three runs to help Alleghany defeat Northside 16-6 in a Blue Ridge District game. Tracy Cummings and Alania Bartley were 3-for-3 and Tracy Shaffer was 3-for-5 as Alleghany improved to 4-4, 3-2.

At Martinsville, Roanoke Valley Christian swamped Carlisle in a doubleheader, winning 16-0 and 26-1. In the first game, Brandi Surkamer had a two-run triple and Amy Hickok went 3-for-3 with a two-run double. In the second game, Jenny Coons had four hits, including a homer.

At Patrick Henry, no E.C. Glass player had more than two hits, but the Hilltoppers (4-4) beat the Patriots 22-13. Shelly King went 4-for-5 with four RBI and Pam Witten was 3-for-5 with two RBI for PH (1-7).

At William Byrd, Ashley Moore went 3-for-5 with a homer, three runs scored and four RBI as Lord Botetourt belted William Byrd 11-3. Janell Sowers pitched a five-hitter for the Cavaliers and Cheryl Webb added two hits with two runs scored.

Lauren Phelan was the winning pitcher and went 2-for-3 with three RBI as Roanoke Catholic crushed Stuart Hall 18-0 at Wasena Park. Also for the Celtics (5-4), Beth Nelson and Liz Landry were 2-for-4 with two RBI and Amy Poindexter was 2-for-3 while driving in three runs. Stuart Hall is 1-4.

At Salem, Amy Atkins struck out nine, pitched a two-hitter and improved to 4-0 as Salem buried Rockbridge County 15-0. Yo Helm had a double and a homer for the Spartans, and Dee Holiday went 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI.

Michelle Hudson hit a homer run and struck out 10 to improve to 7-2 as Franklin County wiped out William Fleming 13-0.

At Chatham, North Cross scored 12 runs in the first two innings and coasted to a 13-6 win over Hargrave Military. Blair Calvert had four hits and Karyn Harter had three with three RBI for the Raiders.

\ GOLF: John Dogan was the medalist at Countryside, shooting a 40 over nine holes to lead Roanoke Valley Christian to a win over Hargrave and Fishburne military academies.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Staunton, Brandy Markell scored the winning goal 2 1/2 minutes into overtime as North Cross defeated Stuart Hall 3-1. Whitfield Mastin and Emily Cook also scored for the Raiders (3-6).
