UVA DROPS ROANOKE IN LACROSSE

At Charlottesville, Tony Nugent scored three goals and had an assist to lead Virginia to a 16-7 men's lacrosse victory over Roanoke in a matchup of the state's top teams Tuesday.

The Cavaliers, ranked eighth in Division I, held Roanoke attackman Brett Smith scoreless. Smith has 49 goals on the season, two shy of the school record.

Kevin Pehlke, Tim Whitley, David Jones and Greg Traynor had two goals each for Virginia (8-4). Pehlke added four assists and Whitley two.

Roanoke, the fifth-ranked team in Division III with a 9-3 record, was led by Brad Hennegan with three goals and David Pollock with two goals and an assist.

In other college sports:

Denny Hedspeth singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Virginia Tech a 6-5 baseball victory over Liberty in Blacksburg.

The Hokies (28-10) led 5-3 heading into the ninth inning, but the Flames (14-20) tied the game on Bill Speek's two-out, two-run single.

Hedspeth and J.R. Hawkins each had two hits for the Hokies.

Individual medalist Jim Pates shot a 3-over par 75 to lead Guilford to its second straight Old Dominion Athletic Conference golf championship at The Crossings in Richmond. The Quakers finished 17 shots ahead of Hampden-Sydney. Washington and Lee (657) was third and Roanoke (685) fifth.

Pearce Smithwick of W&L finished third in the individual standings with a two-round score of 79-79-158, nine shots behind Pates. Bo Williams of W&L tied for sixth at 163.

Glenn Prillaman of Roanoke, eighth individually at 164, was selected ODAC Player of the Year.

Liberty University basketball coach Jeff Meyer has returned to what has been a fruitful recruiting territory for the Flames to secure two more commitments.

Meyer signed both 6-foot-9, 220-pound Sylvester Nikoro and 6-10, 225-pound Peter Aluma on a recent trip to Lagos, Nigeria. The two front line players are expected to help plug gaps left by the graduation of Julius Nwosu and Parish Hickman. The 6-10 Nwosu, who averaged 18.1 points and 8.5 rebounds to lead the Flames in both categories last year, is also a native Nigerian.
