2 BEAT DEADLINE TO SEEK RADFORD SCHOOL BOARD SEATS

Two last-minute School Board hopefuls have joined four previously announced candidates. The deadline was Monday.

Chris Strange wants the board seat now held by Guy Gentry, the board's vice chairman. Gentry already has requested reappointment.

Meg Stone s seeks George Ducker's board seat. Ducker also has asked to be reappointed.

Strange, 39, is the director of support service at Radford Community Hospital. A city resident for 3 1/2 years, he said he believes his people and management skills would come in handy if he's appointed.

He said he believes the board should be service oriented and responsive to teachers, parents, students and taxpayers.

A native of Gastonia, N.C., and a University of Southern Colorado alumnus, Strange is married and the father of two teen-agers.

Meg Stone, 31, grew up in Radford and graduated from Radford High School in 1980. A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School, she returned to her home town in late 1991 following a four-year stint in private practice in Richmond.

She offered no major agenda. "I want to get involved in community activities," she said.

Married and the mother of two children, ages 1 and 3, Stone is in law practice with her father, Ed Stone.

Guy Gilmore and Guy Wohlford announced their intentions last week to seek the unexpired term of board Chairman John McPhail. He has announced plans to step down from the board a year early.

Council will interview all School Board candidates May 18 at 7:30 p.m.
