MISSING BOY, 3, IS FOUND DROWNED

A 3-year-old boy drowned Tuesday afternoon in the Mayo River after wandering away from his grandfather.

Patrick County Sheriff Jay Gregory said the body of Joshua Katzer was found by divers around 7:45 p.m.

Gregory said the boy had been playing with his 2-year-old brother in his grandfather's yard in Stuart. Around 1:30 p.m., his grandfather took the younger boy inside. When he went back outside a few minutes later, Joshua was gone.

Family members searched the nearby woods and riverside, then called the sheriff's department.

A tracking dog failed to pick up a scent, but searchers eventually discovered small footprints beside the river. Two divers were called, and they found the body near the bank in several feet of water.
