SUSPECT FREED IN '90 SLAYING IN RUSSELL

Freddy E. Casey, who was accused of stabbing a man 117 times during a robbery, was freed Monday after prosecutors asked a judge to drop charges of capital murder and robbery.

Russell County Commonwealth's Attorney Mike Moore said authorities still consider Casey a prime suspect. But he said they decided against prosecuting the case now because there is insufficient evidence.

Moore said Casey could be arrested again if new evidence is uncovered that would implicate him.

Casey, 31, of Tazewell County, was indicted in November 1992 in the slaying of Troy L. Stanford, 22, also of Tazewell County.
