IT'LL GET BETTER IF EUROPE DOES, DUPONT SAYS

The chairman of the DuPont Co. said Wednesday that 1993 will be a difficult year, but the chemical giant intends to see improved results, primarily from restructuring.

Chairman Edgar S. Woolard Jr. told shareholders the company's performance ultimately will be "greatly linked to economic recovery in Europe."

"We have continued to invest for the long term, while simultaneously taking the difficult actions necessary to improve competitiveness."

He said the company was encouraged with its first-quarter earnings of $493 million, or 73 cents per share, and sales of $9.1 billion. The results reflected lower overhead - costs DuPont has been working to reduce since it announced a plan to cut costs $1 billion over two years. Since then the work force has been reduced by about 8,900 employees.

DuPont operates a nylon plant in Martinsville.
