FLAMES DROP HOKIES 5-1

Five Liberty players drove in a run each and Rich Humphrey pitched a five-hitter Wednesday as the Flames handed Virginia Tech a 5-1 non-conference baseball loss at Worthington Field in Lynchburg.

Jake Hines, Bill Speek and Sheldon Bream each had two hits for Liberty (14-20), and Speek and Jeremy Tully each hit a solo home run. Humphrey pitched a complete game, allowed no earned runs, struck out two and walked three.

No Tech player had more than one hit. Scott Crim took the loss for the Hokies (28-11), allowing six hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Derek Wall, a double-figure scorer as a freshman at Navy, is one of Richmond's four spring basketball signees. Besides Wall, a 6-7 transfer from Chowan (N.C.) College, the Spiders landed 6-8 Rick Edwards from Chesapeake, Ohio, and Fork Union Military Academy; 6-6 Adam Mobley from Savannah, Ga.; and 6-10 Jason McKinney, a transfer from Siena College.

Ferrum sophomore pitcher Shelley Bowles, a former Franklin County High School player, was voted the Dixie Conference softball player of the year. Panthers first baseman Pam Smythers joined Bowles on the all-conference team. Lisa Pendleton, Missy Spradlin and Robin Sutphin were second team picks for Ferrum, and Katie Chapman and Betsy Forbes made the all-tournament team.
