WYTHE BOARD VOTES TO KEEP TAX INCREASE

The Wythe County Board of Supervisors has voted 3-2 to keep a four-cent tax increase in its proposed 1993-94 budget for now.

Half would go toward service on a bond issue for county fire departments' needs, and half would go into a fund to cover fire needs in future years.

The latest vote on the increase came at a work session Tuesday night, with two supervisors not voting.

The increase largely would go toward needs such as a new tanker, pumper trucks and two fire houses along with repairs and maintenance of existing equipment.

The fire needs were outlined in a study made by the board last year. They amount to more than $1 million.

The supervisors also voted Tuesday night to approve the proposed $20.7 million school budget for the coming year.

They agreed to maintain the same pay levels for employees in county constitutional offices.
