HIGHLAND CAMERATA TO PERFORM JAZZ MASS

A jazz mass, perhaps the first ever written, will be the featured work for the spring series in May by the Highland Camerata. Admission is free.

"Music for the Liturgy, 1961" by the Rev. Standrod T. Carmichael, chorus member and retired rector of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Galax, has been recorded and performed in churches and concert halls elsewhere but this will be its first performances in this area.

The performances are 7:30 p.m. May 13 at the First Christian Church of Hillsville; 4 p.m. May 16 at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Marion; and 7:30 p.m. May 18 at the 1908 Grayson County Courthouse in Independence.

The concerts also include spirituals, gospel, swing and choruses from operas. The Camerata is a community chorus now in its 15th season made up of singers from three counties in Virginia and two in North Carolina.

Marietta Carmichael, the composer's wife, is musical director for the spring series. Special music will be accompanied by John Spence of Hillsville on piano; Don Knox, Galax, saxophone; Rick Muncie, Independence, trumpet; Bob Walters, Wytheville, bass; and Bob Correll, Wytheville, drums. Nancy Hazelwood of Galax is the Camerata's regular pianist.
