3 PULASKI DEPUTIES RETIRING WITH HALF-CENTURY OF EXPERIENCE

Three members of the Pulaski County Sheriff's Department with more than a half-century of combined law enforcement experience are retiring.

Capt. Maynard S. Hedge, Shift Sgt. Clarence L. Hamblin and Chief Deputy Max Campbell all received certificates from the county Board of Supervisors this week honoring their years of service.

Hedge joined the department as a deputy July 1, 1969. "I thought I came here to eat," he joked after receiving his certificate and being asked to speak.

Hamblin began his law enforcement career as a correctional officer April 1, 1978. "I'd like to thank my wife," he said. "She's got to put up with me now more than ever."

Campbell joined the department July 1, 1974, after retiring from the U.S. Air Force in 1973 and working for a year as a security guard at Virginia Tech. He started as a road deputy under Sheriff Henry Hall and served under both Hall's successors.

"Here stand three men who have served you well," said former Sheriff Frank Conner, who followed Hall. Current Sheriff Ralph Dobbins said medical conditions prompted the three to retire before they might have chosen to do so but "we look forward to joining them someday."
