Ward Angle, owner of Precision Docks and president of the group, said volunteers will work on removing material from the lake 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on that date.
A picnic will follow at 6 at the large shelter in Claytor Lake State Park, with businesses donating food for the volunteers.
The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors is fine-tuning a new policy governing the lake. It covers such areas as safety, coordination with other organizations, such as the Friends group and Appalachian Power Co. which owns the lake, preservation activities, such as the planned annual clean up, and carrying out a comprehensive lake plan adopted in 1990 designating the lake as a recreational and economic asset.
Supervisor Bruce Fariss said he is concerned about debris coming into Pulaski County from other localities and getting stopped by the Claytor Lake dam. "Hay bales and animals and what-have-you are coming down from the New River, and we're going to have to address that," Angle added.
But he wanted to complete coordination efforts first for activities like the cleanup among his group, the supervisors and Apco before approaching other governing bodies to enlist them in efforts to preserve the lake.
