100 METERS SURE TO THRILL AT COSMO

It might be the greatest 100 meters in the 28th running of the Cosmopolitan Invitational track meet that starts with trials today in Salem.

William Fleming sophomore Leroy Witt will try to outduel a pair of seniors, Salem's Keith Moyer and Cave Spring's Tiki Barber, in what will be the feature event during Saturday's running event finals that begin at 11:30 a.m.

Last weekend, each had a time good enough to make him a state competitor in the 100-meter dash.

Whitt was the fastest with a 10.622, ahead of Barber's 10.683 and Moyer's 10.7. Whitt beat Barber in a dual meet. Moyer's time came in the All-American Relays at Radford.

In team competition, Northside's boys and Patrick Henry's girls are the favorites. The Vikings will have a tough fight from Cave Spring, William Fleming and possibly Salem for the team title while PH appears to be a huge favorite among the girls behind Arminta Crosby and Deidre Trigg.

Northside is coming off its All-American Relays championship. The Vikings beat Christiansburg for the boys' title and avenged a dual meet loss to the Blue Demons.

"We had to [forfeit] them nine points in discus because our cage wasn't up and that's why they beat us. But dual meets don't matter [that much]," said Northside coach Arnold Humphries.

The Vikings are very strong in the relays and have outstanding individuals such as John Huffman in the shot put and Jonathan Stewart in the 200 meters. Stewart, though, will be the underdog against Staunton River's Phillip Clements.

Cave Spring's hopes will be pinned on twins Ronde and Tiki Barber, who will try to dominate the long and triple jump events, the hurdles and the dashes.

Fleming's main hope is Witt, who was third as a freshman in the Cosmopolitan. Salem has Moyer, but coach Larry Bradley says there may not be enough depth to make the Spartans challengers.

"If everything goes like it's going now, the 100 is going to be a good race. If we're going to win the title, it will be in the sprints or middle distances," said Fleming coach Rudy Dillard.

Crosby figures to dominate the long jump, and the 100- and 200-meter dashes for PH. Trigg should do well in both hurdle events and the triple jump while Regina Johnson is favored in the girls' weight classes for the Patriots.

"I think we have a better team than last year," said Patrick Henry coach Jeff Johnson, whose charges won last year's Cosmo by 40 points. "We have another year of maturity and everyone's been working harder in the weight room."
