VMI PULLS UPSET IN SC BASEBALL

John Payne pitched a seven-hit complete game shutout and swatted a two-run homer run Thursday to power eighth-seeded VMI to an 8-0 upset over top-seeded Georgia Southern in the opening round of the Southern Conference baseball tournament in Charleston, S.C.

VMI (18-27) turned a tournament record five double plays. It was the first time in league history that a No. 8 seed knocked off the No. 1 seed.

The Keydets play the winner of East Tennessee State-Davidson today at 3 p.m. The Eagles (33-17) will face the loser.

VMI shortstop David Groseclose had a run-scoring hit and was named second team all-conference on Thursday. Second baseman Brian Adams also made the second team.

In other college sports:

Former University of Virginia basketball players Heather Burge, Heidi Burge and Dawn Staley are among 60 players invited to participate in the 1993 USA Women's Basketball National Team Trials.

The tryouts are scheduled May 20-23 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., followed by a National Team finalists mini-camp from May 23-27.

UVa players Jenny Boucek and Amy Lofstedt will be members of the East team at the Olympic Festival set for July 24-28 in San Antonio, Texas.

Jen Callen and Ly-Lan Schofield of Virginia have been selected to the All-ACC women's tennis team.

Callen, ranked 27th in the country, compiled a 24-7 record at No. 1 singles. Schofield had a 6-2 record against ACC competition and won nine consecutive matches to end the regular season.

ACC tournament most valuable player Christine Neuman was one of four Duke players to earn all-conference.

The 1993 Southern Conference men's and women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships will be held this weekend at Kidd Brewer Stadium on the campus of Appalachian State. The host Mountaineers are the defending men's and women's champions.

VMI is ranked first in several events: the 400-meter dash (Holm Akoma-Sey), the long jump (Damon Richardson) and the 1,600 relay.

After seven years as an assistant and one year as head coach at Virginia, field hockey coach Julie Dayton has been chosen the head coach at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. Dayton, a Longwood College graduate, guided the Cavaliers to a 15-6-1 record and a No. 10 ranking this season.
