GLENVAR HANDS SALEM FIRST SETBACK IN SOFTBALL, 3-1

Glenvar's Bobbie Jo Wright pitched a complete-game four-hitter, as the Highlanders downed neighborhood rival Salem 3-1 in a non-district girls' softball game Thursday.

The loss was Salem's first in 12 games this season.

Wright struck out three and walked none. The Spartans hurt themselves by committing seven errors.

In other softball:

Blair Calvert went 3-for-4 and knocked in five runs, leading North Cross to a 19-0 romp over visiting Stuart Hall in a Blue Ridge Conference game. Erin Humphries had a home run and three RBI for North Cross.

Amy Ford went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and three RBI to help host Roanoke Valley Christian beat Lynchburg Christian Academy 13-5 in a Blue Ridge Conference game. Stephanie Webb had two doubles and two RBI for Roanoke Valley (5-4 overall and district). LCA is 6-4 and 5-2.

\ BASEBALL: Kelly Dampeer went 3-for-4 and knocked in four runs, leading Northside to a 15-12 win over William Fleming in a non-district game. Northside scored five runs in the third and seventh in the fourth to build a lead. Mike Souma paced Fleming, going 3-for-5 with four RBI.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At William Byrd, Andy McCaskill riddled Rockbridge County for five goals in the Terriers' 12-1 Blue Ridge District victory. Kevin Niday had two goals and two assists, Michael Berry two goals and three assists, and Stuart Kelly had two goals. William Byrd (8-0 overall, 6-0 in the district) outshot Rockbridge (2-6 in the district) 42-2.

At Chatham, Jorge Bermudes scored two goals, leading Hargrave Military Academy to a 4-1 win over Roanoke Catholic in a Virginia Independents Conference game. Chuck Gilliland scored for the Celtics (3-4, 1-2).

At Northside, five players scored for the Vikings as they shut out Salem 5-0 in a Blue Ridge District game. Ryan Wickstrom, Jon Campbell, J.J. Larsen, Robbie Trent and Aaron Curfiss scored as Northside (3-5-1 overall, 3-3 in the district) outshot the Spartans 34-5.

At River's Edge, Bobby Wornick's two goals paced Cave Spring to a 3-1 win over William Fleming in a Roanoke Valley District match. The Knights are 6-2, 4-1; the Colonels 2-4-1, 1-3-1.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At North Cross, Cave Spring's Tiffany Jackson scored on a header 20 minutes into the second half as the Knights beat North Cross 1-0. Cave Spring (6-0-1) got off 43 shots but scored just once against Raider goalie Brandy Markell. Jackson was assisted by Stephanie Scanlin. North Cross is 3-8.

\ GOLF: At Roanoke Country Club, John Han of Lynchburg Christian was the medalist as LCA beat Roanoke Catholic 182-200 in a nine-hole match. Han shot a 7-over-par 42.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: William Byrd's No. 2 doubles team of Carey Mason and Justin Pasfield won a three-set match to give Byrd a 5-4 victory over Rockbridge. Byrd is 3-5 in the Blue Ridge District; Rockbridge is 1-7.
