MONTGOMERY TEXTILE RECYCLING

The Montgomery County Recycling Department is participating in the first regional textile-recycling effort in Virginia. Good, clean, usable clothing should still be donated to appropriate charitable organizations. But now there is another recycling option for textile items that are too worn or out-of-date for further wear.

All items for recycling must be clean and dry and placed in a special textile only recycling bag. The bags are available free of charge at the county recycling center on County Drive, off U.S. 460 across from Corning.

After putting textile items in the bag, the top should be secured with a rubber band or twist tie and the bag brought to the recycling center Monday-Saturday, 8 a.m-4 p.m. The towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg, as well as county schools and Virginia Tech may have supplemental textile bag pick-up and drop-off locations and times. Check with the recycling contacts at the towns or schools for details.

All textile materials for recycling are sent to a Pennsylvania company where they are hand sorted for distribution to second-hand stores or foreign countries, or they are sold to the rag or craft industries.

For more information, call the Montgomery County Office of Environmental Conservation at 382-5793.
