CAR HITS UTILITY POLE, PUTS 1,600 IN THE DARK

Some 1,600 Appalachian Power Co. customers lost power in Northwest Roanoke about 10 p.m. Thursday when a car hit a utility pole along Melrose Avenue near 24th Street.

Most of the households affected were between Melrose and Peters Creek Road. By 11:15 p.m., power had been restored to about half of the homes and Apco was working to restore service to all the customers, said company spokeswoman Victoria Ratcliff.
