PARRY MCCLUER RALLIES TO BEAT KNIGHTS 3-2

Chris Farris' bases-loaded bloop single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning carried Parry McCluer past James River 3-2 in a Pioneer District baseball game Friday at Buena Vista.

Farris' hit into right field made a winner of senior right-hander Keith Martin (2-2). Martin pitched all nine innings, struck out nine, walked two and gave up four hits. Parry McCluer (2-7 overall, 2-3 district) overcame six errors.

In other baseball:

At Pearisburg, Mitch Reed pitched a one-hitter, striking out 10 in five innings as Giles swatted Rocky Gap 11-1 in a Mountain Empire District game. Glenn Stowers had two doubles and Danny Ratcliffe had a two-run single for the Spartans (7-4, 5-1). The Eagles are winless.

At Independence, Grayson County scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth to rally past Narrows 10-8 in a Mountain Empire District game. Matthew Campbell picked up the win with two perfect innings of relief and Chad Shaffner went 3-for-4 for the Devils (6-5, 5-1). Mitch Hawks added two triples. For Narrows (8-3, 5-1), Mike Blankenship homered and Sean Harris had three hits.

At Hot Springs, Bath County scored four runs in the fifth inning on its way to a come-from-behind 10-8 Pioneer District win over Craig County. Kris Phillips had two doubles for the Chargers (5-2, 5-1) and freshman right-hander Jon Rodgers won his fourth start without a loss. Craig County is 4-9, 2-6.

At Northside, Ben Taylor and Kelly Dampeer both homered and Allen Christian hurled a six-hitter as the Vikings knocked off Rockbridge County 6-3.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At Martinsville, Jonathan Crabtree scored an unassisted game-winning goal with 14 minutes remaining as Laurel Park edged Magna Vista 1-0.

At Blacksburg, eight players scored as Blacksburg drilled Marion 8-0 and improved to 10-0.

At Wytheville on Thursday, George Wythe outscored Giles 4-1 for a non-district victory. Chris Parks, Nahn Nguyen, Jason Bowles and Randy Blevins scored for George Wythe (4-4-1).

\ BOYS' TRACK: At Covington, Michael Hunter won the 300-meter hurdles and all three jump events as Alleghany beat Covington 77-50 in a dual meet. Alleghany's Shawn Burkes won the 110 hurdles in a school record 14.5 seconds, and also took first in the 100 and 400.

\ GIRLS' TRACK: Three athletes won two events each as Alleghany skunked Covington 116-10 in a dual meet. Amy Bennett won the 1,600 and 300 hurdles; Jessica Rago won the 100 and triple jump; and Melanie Fischer took first in the long jump and 200.

George Wythe won the girls' competition at the Blue Demon Relays, edging Christiansburg 44-42 1/2. Giles was third with 26 1/2 points, and Pulaski County had 14.

\ SOFTBALL: At William Byrd, Deanna Aldrich was 2-for-3 and scored three runs as William Byrd defeated Blue Ridge District foe Alleghany 14-3. Teammate Tracy Doupnik hit a triple and had two RBI. Aldrich, Doupnik and Tamesa Adams teamed up to pitch a three-hitter for the Terriers (8-3, 3-2 Blue Ridge). Alleghany is 4-6, 3-3.

At Covington, Glenvar swept a doubleheader from Covington with big wins of 16-5 and 23-6. In the second game, Marilea Hale pitched a four-hitter and Bobbi Jo Wright belted a homer.

At Daleville, Yo Helm had four hits and knocked in four runs to lead Salem to a 14-6 Blue Ridge District win over Lord Botetourt. Rhonda Rankin went the distance for the win. Salem is 11-1 overall, 5-1 district; Lord Botetourt 8-2, 3-1.

At Lexington, Northside drew 19 walks and sent Rockbridge County to its 10th straight loss with a 19-2 win. Shannon Yopp pitched a three-hitter while going 3-for-4. Teresa Harris went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Vikings, who scored seven runs in the second inning.

\ GOLF: The Roanoke Valley Christian golf team shot a 167 to defeat Carlisle in a non-district match at Countryside. The Chiefs shot a 173 but captured the individual medalist honors as Wes Jolly and Brian Hardy both shot a 38.
