ANGLER AIMS FOR ANOTHER OPTIMIST TITLE

No one has been a back-to-back winner in the 25-year history of the Cave Spring Optimist Club tournament at Smith Mountain Lake, but Barry Turman was trying to change that Friday.

The Wirtz angler entered a 1.86-pound crappie, the biggest for the species in the early going of the tournament, which continues until noon Sunday.

Last year, Turman won the crappie category with a 3-pound catch, the heaviest crappie in the history of the contest.

Leading the smallmouth division was Fred McGlothlin, of Davenport, who used a blue grub near the mouth of Gills Creek to hook a 4.38-pound fish. The best largemouth was a 5.24-pounder caught by Donny Bowman of Chester.

Randy Whittington of Walnut Grove, N.C. led the walleye category, with a 5.07-pound fish; James Morgan of Simon, W.Va., had the best catfish, 6.96 pounds.

Only one muskie was brought to the scales, a 9-pounder that failed to meet the contest's 10-pound minimum.
