DESPITE FEDERAL THREAT, CITADEL WON'T GIVE IN

The Citadel won't settle a lawsuit by a woman seeking admission to the all-male state military college despite a federal threat to intervene, the school's attorney said Friday.

The U.S. Justice Department may be getting involved because it doesn't like rulings in a similar case involving Virginia Military Institute, Citadel attorney Dawes Cooke said.

The Justice Department notified the Citadel and Gov. Carroll Campbell this week that it would intervene in the case of Shannon Richey Faulkner, who filed a federal class-action lawsuit in March.

She was accepted by the school in January, then rejected when the Citadel learned she was a woman. - Associated Press
