VMI'S RUN CONTINUES IN TOURNEY

Louis Napoleon tied a Southern Conference baseball tournament record with five hits and led surprising VMI to its second consecutive tournament victory, 15-5 over Davidson on Friday at College Park in Charleston, S.C.

Napoleon got his hits in six at-bats for the eighth-seeded Keydets (19-27), who had 20 hits. VMI upset top-seeded Charleston Southern 8-0 on Thursday in the opening round.

In a winners' bracket game today at 3 p.m., VMI will play Western Carolina, which defeated The Citadel 6-3. Fifth-seeded Davidson (19-27) will play Marshall in the losers' bracket.

The Keydets took the lead for good with three runs in the first inning off Wildcats starter Chris Carrigan (6-4), who gave up 11 hits and nine earned runs, walked three and struck out two in 4 innings. VMI added two runs in the second inning, three each in the fourth and fifth, one in the seventh and three in the ninth. The Keydets committed two errors.

Mark Hazelwood (5-1) got the victory for VMI. He pitched five innings, allowing seven of Davidson's nine hits and four earned runs while striking out one and walking three. VMI's Brian Adams hit a three-run double, and John Payne had a solo homer.

In other college sports:

Roanoke College's and Washington and Lee's women's lacrosse teams won semifinal games and advanced to today's championship game of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament in Lexington.

In the first semifinal, Roanoke (10-3), ranked 15th in Division III, got seven goals from Liz Florence and overcame a 7-2 first-half deficit to win its semifinal 16-11 over Lynchburg (9-6). The Maroons trailed 9-8 at halftime and took command with five straight goals. Francesca Foord-Kelcy had four goals and Jennifer Shimrak added three. Jen Winkler's three goals led Lynchburg.

Four VMI athletes placed and VMI is in third place after the first day of the Southern Conference outdoor track and field championships at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. Damon Richardson was second in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 8 3/4 inches; East Tennessee State's Jeff Horton won with a jump of 23-10 3/4. In the hammer throw, VMI's Frank Boehling was second at 167-8, Fritz Ligday was third at 167-2 and Zack Scott was fifth at 154-5; Appalachian State's Rich Grant won with a throw of 178-1. ETSU leads the team standings with 47 points, Appalachian State has 31 and VMI has 25.

Radford University sophomore Matthew Reynolds, a lightly used 6-foot-7 forward, has left the basketball team because of complications resulting from an asthmatic condition. However, because of an NCAA hardship provision, he will retain his scholarship and continue to serve the team in some capacity. That frees a scholarship, but Radford coach Ron Bradley said he does not expect to fill it this year. Reynolds was used in mop-up roles last year, playing in five games.
