AUTO RACING-BONUS ON TAP TONIGHT AT FCS

Franklin County Speedway is offering a $1,000 bonus to the winner's take tonight if a Ford prevails in the 100-lap Late Model Stock Car race at Callaway.

"We haven't had a Ford in the Late Model winner's circle since midway through last season," FCS promoter Whitey Taylor said.

Rodney "Six-Pack" Cundiff, last year's winner, is considered the driver with best chance of picking up the extra check. Cundiff finished third in his only start at Franklin County this year.

Taylor has doubled the bounty to $200 on Phillip VanDerVeer in the Street Stock division. VanDerVeer has won all three Street Stock races this April.

Tonight's card starts at 8 p.m. The three previous races had started an hour earlier because of cool weather.

Johnny Rumley, Kenny Montgomery and Dale Sutphin each will be going for his third consecutive victory of the season tonight in the Tombstone Pizza/WSLC 200 at New River Valley Speedway in Radford.

Rumley of Winston-Salem, N.C., has won the first two Late Model Stock races. Montgomery, from Parrott, and Sutphin, of Max Meadows, have won twice in the Limited Sportsman and Modified Mini Stock divisions.

The trio lead the points standings going into the third week of competition at the .416-mile NASCAR track.

Veteran Paul Radford of Ferrum, who has a third- and fourth-place finish in the LMSC class, is seeking his first win in his new ride. More than 30 Late Model Stock entries are expected.

Gates open at 2 p.m., with practice at 4. Qualifying gets under way at 6:15, with the first green flag falling at 8. Admission is $8 for adults; children 10 and under are admitted for $1.
