CAVE SPRING NOTCHES WIN OVER EAGLES

Will Goodman had a home run and four RBI and Robey Caldwell picked up his third win in relief as Cave Spring took an 8-6 Roanoke Valley District baseball win over visiting Franklin County on Friday.

Scott Fayed went 3-for-4 for the Knights (9-2, 7-0), who have won eight straight games. For the Eagles (6-3, 4-2), David Perdue had two homers and four RBI, and Riley Hodges had two hits with a home run.

In other baseball:

At Covington, Gary Wiggins hit a two-run homer and Shannon Gray went 3-for-5 as undefeated William Byrd slipped past Alleghany 13-12 in a Blue Ridge District game.

The Mountaineers (10-2, 3-2 Blue Ridge) led 4-0 until the top of the fifth inning when the Terriers scored six runs. Alleghany tied the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the fifth, but William Byrd (12-0, 5-0) outscored the Mountaineers 7-6 in the sixth and seventh innings for the win. Alleghany outhit the Terriers 15-9 but left the the bases loaded as the Mountaineers suffered their second loss.

Chris Farris' bases-loaded bloop single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning carried Parry McCluer past James River 3-2 in a Pioneer District game at Buena Vista. Farris' hit made a winner of senior right-hander Keith Martin (2-2). Parry McCluer (2-7 overall, 2-3 district) overcame six errors.

At Hot Springs, Bath County scored four runs in the fifth inning on its way to a come-from-behind 10-8 Pioneer District win over Craig County. Kris Phillips had two doubles for the Chargers (5-2, 5-1) and freshman right-hander Jon Rodgers won his fourth start without a loss. Craig County is 4-9, 2-6.

At Northside, Ben Taylor and Kelly Dampeer both went deep and Allen Christian hurled a six-hitter as the Vikings knocked off Rockbridge County 6-3.

Jeremy Almanode went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Patrick Henry committed a school-record 10 errors as Pulaski County defeated the Patriots 10-8 in the Roanoke Valley District. Winning pitcher Jamie Arnold settled down after a rocky start, allowing only three hits after the first inning. For PH (1-8, 1-4), Brad Wright had three hits, including two doubles and three RBI. The Cougars are 2-10, 2-6.

At Covington, Jason Anderson pitched a two-hitter, striking out twelve and walking three as Glenvar defeated the Cougars 1-0 in Pioneer district game. Joey Hutton hit an RBI-single to give the Highlanders (4-8, 4-2 Pioneer) the win. Charlie Carper pitched five innings for Covington (4-2 in the district) and gave up two hits.

At Salem, an eight-run fifth inning carried Lord Botetourt to a 9-3 win over the Spartans. For the Cavaliers, Shannon Williams went 3-for-5 and Keith Shupe pitched the complete game victory. Tommy Lee and Tracy Butt each went 2-for-4 for Salem.

Host Holy Cross (10-2, 9-0) swept a doubleheader from Roanoke Valley Christian (4-5, 4-5), winning 13-0 and 10-3.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: At North Cross, Mark Roberts scored 20 minutes into the first half and the Raiders held on for a 1-0 win over Patrick Henry. North Cross is 10-1-2. The Patriots are 2-3-3.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Cave Spring, Tiffany Jackson scored one goal and assisted on another as the Knights defeated Salem 2-1 in a non-district match. Heather Moore scored for the Spartans (3-2-1) six minutes into the game. Jackson scored with an assist by Aimee Beightol as Cave Spring (7-0-1) tied the game with three minutes left in the first half. Assisted by Jackson, Ann Schleupner scored the game-winning goal in the second half.

\ SOFTBALL: At North Cross, Stephanie Webb and Amy Helton each tripled and drove in two runs as Roanoke Valley Christian slid past North Cross 11-10. Amy Hickok added two hits, including a homer, for the Eagles. For the Raiders, Karyn Harter went 3-for-4 with three RBI.

At Covington, Glenvar swept a doubleheader from Covington with wins of 16-5 and 23-6. In the second game, Marilea Hale pitched a four-hitter and Bobbi Jo Wright belted a homer.

At Rocky Mount, Shannon Smithson went 3-for-3 with a double and five RBI as Cave Spring stomped Franklin County 9-1 in a Roanoke Valley District game. Melissa Grimm was 3-for-4 and pitcher Jenny Callio threw a four-hitter and struck out six batters for the Knights (8-2 overall, 4-0 in the district).

At Daleville, Yo Helm had four hits and knocked in four runs to lead Salem to a 14-6 Blue Ridge District win over Lord Botetourt. Rhonda Rankin went the distance for the win. Salem is 11-1 overall, 5-1 district; Lord Botetourt 8-2, 3-1.

At William Byrd, Deanna Aldrich was 2-for-3 and scored three runs as William Byrd defeated Blue Ridge District foe Alleghany 14-3. Teammate Tracy Doupnik hit a triple and had two RBI. Aldrich, Doupnik and Tamesa Adams teamed up to pitch a three-hitter for the Terriers (8-3, 3-2 Blue Ridge). Alleghany is 4-6, 3-3.

At Lexington, Northside drew 19 walks and sent Rockbridge County to its 10th straight loss with a 19-2 win. Shannon Yopp pitched a three-hitter while going 3-for-4. Teresa Harris went 2-for-2 with two runs scored for the Vikings, who scored seven runs in the second inning.

Winning pitcher Michelle King added a run-scoring triple as Patrick Henry wiped out William Fleming 17-4. Jodi Hyler tagged on a three-run homer for the Patriots.

\ GOLF: Roanoke Valley Christian shot a 167 to defeat Carlisle in a non-district match at Countryside. The Chiefs shot a 173, but captured the individual medalist honors as Wes Jolly and Brian Hardy both shot 38.

\ BOYS' LACROSSE: At Vinton, Jay Reynolds scored nine goals as the Vinton club team crushed the Campbell County club team 19-0. Brian Cooley added two goals and three assists for Vinton, the club team of William Byrd High School.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At River's Edge, Amanda Bounds and Meredith Bowden each scored as Patrick Henry defeated Charlottesville 3-1. Emily Pegenkamp and Carrie Moore recorded assists for the Patriots (4-0-1). Charlottesville dropped to 5-3-2.
