Carleton J. Bosley, a student at Washburn Middle School in Topeka, Kan., captured the top spot by correctly responding to the question: "What is the least number of people you could have in a group and still be sure that at least three of them have birthdays in the same month." The correct answer is 25.
Bosley topped 223 students from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and overseas schools run by the departments of State and Defense.
He won an $8,000 scholarship, a personal computer, a week at U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Ala., and is scheduled to meet President Clinton today at the White House.
