RADFORD, W&M TUITION GOING UP

Radford University's in-state tuition will jump another 6.4 percent this fall, the Board of Visitors decided Friday.

And at the College of William and Mary, the Board of Visitors approved a plan increasing tuition for both in-state and out-of-state students 11 percent.

In the last seven years tuition and fees at Radford have gone up nearly 63 percent for state students.

"Although extremely regrettable, this action is necessitated by new state guidelines on funding for colleges and universities," university President Donald Dedmon said.

Three years ago the state was providing 75 percent of the funding for colleges and universities, but now state funds provide 55 percent, Dedmon said.

"The state of Virginia ought to be appropriating substantially more money to higher education," he said.

In-state tuition and fees at Radford will jump to $2,924, and room and board will go up 1.2 percent to $3,972. Tuition for out-of-state students - which has gone up nearly 160 percent since 1986 - will rise 6.6 percent to $6,684.

Dedmon said out-of-state students are hurt by a state law that requires these students to pay 100 percent of their education costs.

In-state graduate fees will rise to $3,070, while out-of-state graduate students will pay $5,632.

At William and Mary, the 8.2 percent cost increase from $7,947 to $8,602 includes tuition, fees and average room and board costs for in-state students. For out-of-state students, the raise will be from $15,327 to $16,792, or 9.6 percent.

Students at the college's Marshall-Wythe School of Law pay an additional $850 in tuition, while graduate students pay an additional $300.

Radford's Dedmon pointed out that his is still one of the best college bargains in the state. Of Virginia's 15 colleges and universities, only Norfolk State University will have cheaper tuition and fees than Radford.

Radford's board also approved a new telephone service for students living in university residence halls.

Beginning this fall, each boarding student will be charged $138 - on top of the room and board - for yearly telephone service. Dedmon said the university decided to provide telephone service at the request of students and the Inter-residence Hall Council.

The cost for the telephone service will be lower than what students would pay if they contracted with the local phone company, he said.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
