FORD MAY BE UAW'S STRIKE TARGET FOR '93

Ford Motor Co. will be the strike target in this year's negotiations between the United Auto Workers union and the Big Three, according to a dozen delegates at the UAW's bargaining convention this week.

The UAW mapped out bargaining proposals for the talks with Ford, General Motors and Chrysler Corp. The agreement covers 425,000 workers and expires at midnight Sept. 14.

Picking a strike target is months away and the union's leadership, not the bargaining convention, makes the decision. Still, delegates from GM, Ford and Chrysler plants say the signs point to Ford. Delegates figure Ford is in a better position to give the UAW what it wants on two key issues: job security and health care. - Cox News Service
